The aspirating syringe differs from most\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps12\">syringes in that it is designed to inject anesthetic from a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps13\">carpule.\u00a0<span class=\"ps13\">The parts of an aspirating syringe\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps14\">consist of a threaded tip where the needle attaches, a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps15\">barrel where the carpule is placed, a piston rod<\/span><span class=\"ps16\">(plunger) with a harpoon attached that embeds itself\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps17\">into the rubber stopper of the carpule, a finger grip, and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps18\">a thumb ring.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ps13\"><span class=\"ps18\"><span class=\"ps18\">The syringe\u00a0allows the veterinarian\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps19\">to aspirate (draw back) the injection site to see if the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps20\">needle tip is located in a blood vessel before injecting\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps21\">the anesthetic solution. Once the harpoon is engaged\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps22\">into the rubber stopper of the anesthetic carpule, the vetrenarian<\/span><span class=\"ps23\">\u00a0can apply inward or outward pressure on the s<span class=\"ps26\">topper by exerting pressure on the thumb ring. Pulling\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps27\">the thumb ring outward also pulls the plunger outward\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps28\">producing an aspirating effect; whereas, pushing\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps29\">inward forces the anesthetic solution through the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ps30\">needle.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This syringe is used in animal dentistry to inject a local\u00a0anesthetic.
